This happens when you are on the Rock

Rock on water

As human beings we sometimes feel unstable and desperate. The psalmist felt the same way, but he knew to wait on God.

Psalm 40:1-3 (NKJV) tells us,

  • I patiently waited for the Lord

    • God has a time for everything, so He exercises our patience.

    • We must wait

  • And he inclined to me and heard my cry.

    • What makes God bow down to us and hear our cry?

  • He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay,

    • Jeremiah was put in a dungeon

      • So, they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon, there was no water, but mire. So, Jeremiah sank in the mire. (Jeremiah 38:6 NKJV)

    • The king had Jeremiah taken out of the dungeon.

      • Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take from here thirty men with you, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies.” (Jeremiah 38:10 NKJV)

    • Perhaps Jeremiah felt hopeless, that he was going to die in the dungeon where he was, but he still hoped in God.

      • God took care of him and allowed him to come out of the dungeon.

  • And set my feet upon a rock and established my steps.

    • In the dungeon Jeremiah was sinking. On the rock, God straightened his steps and gave him firmness.

    • He goes from a stage of despair to a stage of stability

    • In the dungeon maybe everything was dark, and he couldn't see. Being pulled out of the dungeon, he could see clearly again.

    • When we are in the pit of despair, we cannot see clearly; we feel surrounded by darkness.

    • When God puts our feet on the rock, His light illuminates our surroundings, and we can see clearly.

  • He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God

    • After being delivered, God puts a new song in our mouths.

  • Many will see it and fear

    • When God glorifies Himself in us, others are driven to fear God.

  • And they will trust in the Lord.

    • Not only does it produce reverent fear in others, but it leads them to trust God.

  • He puts your feet on the rock

    • You can see in the distance

    • You feel safe, even if the water is lashing

When we are on the rock, we feel sure that nothing bad will happen to us. God wants to put your feet on the rock and give you a new song. If you haven’t done so, accept him today!
