When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3 (NIV)
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by fear, with your mind racing with thoughts and leaving you feeling out of control? If you have, you are not alone. It's a feeling we all face in life. David, the Psalmist, identified with this situation and learned to put his trust in God.
In the aforementioned verse, David proclaims that even though he will face fear in his life, he will trust in God whenever it happens. Let's examine this verse in detail:
1. When - David says that fear won't happen all the time, only at certain times. However, it should not linger within us forever. We can overcome it.
2. I - David is experiencing fear. Others may not understand his situation, but God understands and is there for His children. Nonetheless, when we start thinking of ourselves instead of God, we lose focus and deviate from what God wants to accomplish in and through us.
3. Am - In the Bible, God presented Himself to Moses as "I am Who I am." This tells us that God is all-powerful and controls everything, including our lives, emotions, and feelings.
4. Afraid - David is experiencing fear, an emotion that can cause us to run away from difficult situations or attempt to avoid them if we perceive them as harmful, risky, or dangerous.
5. I put - Although he may experience fear, David chooses to control his feelings and emotions and not let fear conquer him.
6. My trust - When we trust another person, we confide in them. Here, David believes that God is reliable, truthful, able, and has the strength to carry him through what he is facing.
7. In you - Fear is contrary to faith. David chooses to put his trust in God, the One who created him. God is aware of our struggles and wants us to confide in Him and trust that it will all work out for our comfort and happiness.
Therefore, it is not God’s intention for us to worry. He plans to show us His favor. He has given us the power to live fearlessly through unconditional love, which casts out all fear. He has given us a sound mind, and we can live freely with the assurance that He is always watching over us.
So, if you're feeling afraid today and unable to conquer what you're facing, remember… love conquers all, and God’s love is available to all who confess that He is our Lord. Let us open our hearts to Him and trust Him with our lives today and always. Will we allow Him to care for us today?
