To walk on water Peter needed faith in Jesus, and to focus solely on Him.
He and the disciples witnessed a miracle that allowed them to perceive Jesus in a different light, compelling Peter to join the Master upon the water. Despite the strong winds, Jesus walked on the water, and the disciples, frightened, mistook Him for a ghost.
Curious, Peter responded, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." (Matthew 14:28, NKJV) Believing in the impossible, he stepped out of the boat and kept his eyes on the One who called him.
As he walked towards Jesus, he noticed the storm and became fearful, which caused him to start sinking. Thus, he immediately cried out, "Lord, save me."
Often, our faith grows stronger witnessing God's presence in our journey through life waters. Embracing the impossible, we follow Jesus. All seems right until life storms arise and our focus wavers. Fear sets in, and believing we can't weather the storm or fulfill the Lord's calling, we lose sight of the purpose and dreams He has for us. At this point, the Lord tells us, "Just believe." With the guarantee that He is in control, we need not be afraid for He knows what lies ahead in our lives; after all, He beckons us to follow Him.
The Lord assured Isaiah:
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you." (Isaiah 43:2, NKJV)
God promises to be with us through all life trials. Consequently, even as we pass through deep waters He is with us. When we struggle, the Lord is there, and improvement will come. With impeccable timing, God reminds us that everything has a time and season. He always acts at the opportune moment. Even when life is challenging, we must maintain faith that there is a reason for our struggles. God's design is for our ultimate happiness. We should yield to the One who beckons us with the word, "Come."
Not allowing Peter to sink, he witnessed Jesus reaching out to save him. Together, they boarded the boat, and the storm calmed. When the circumstances overwhelm us, the Lord offers His hand to rescue us, assuring us, "See that you not despair for I am with you always."
